Marek Siwiec MEP on Poland & Europe

Finally, everyone can openly criticise Grzegorz Napieralski, the leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD). The result of this party in the parliamentary elections justifies any term one might use to describe him. And those who were the most loyal, even slavish, during the whole campaign, today shout the loudest.

If the Democratic Left Alliance considers that the only problem of the party was Napieralski’s policy, then they make a mistake. Sooner or later, even without him as a leader, we will encounter an obstacle that may take different forms – i.e. the party will be governed in an archaic way, there will be no internal dialogue, etc., etc. Whoever replaces Grzegorz Napieralski, must show a recipe for a new party, in the new reality that contains the presence of our new competitor Janusz Palikot on the left side of political scene.

I will say even more: trying to eliminate Napieralski from the party would be a mistake too. He is one of the six recognisable faces of SLD in Poland. We cannot afford its loss.

To my mind, the current leader will provide the National Council of the party with a thorough analysis of the failure and he will not be afraid to estimate the size of his own responsibility. But if he stubbornly charges the whole “team” for the defeat, as he did yesterday, the “team” will end up jumping down his throat.
