Marek Siwiec MEP on Poland & Europe

Hardly anyone notices a few additional consequences of a new electoral arithmetic in Italy. A strong position of Silvio Berlusconi and Beppe Grillo (Five Star Movement) reflects Italian support for anti-German rhetoric of both leaders. It also shows how easy it is to play with anti-European minds.

Grillo could do anything during the campaign. Therefore, he was openly criticising German leadership throughout the crisis recovery process. He was supported by Silvio Berlusconi who accused Germany of dominating the outermost countries. Grillo considered leaving the eurozone by Italy. Those two magicians were supported by almost 60% of voters. The rest backed up the leftish rationalism and the iron fist of Mario Monti’s austerity.

By the way, Monti’s dream about a European career fell apart. If he had kept the position of the prime minister he would have been a strong candidate for the future President of the European Commission.
