Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the Polish Law and Justice party, growled furiously that the European Union summit on the Eastern Partnership is a shame for Poland because the partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) have not joined a resolution condemning the situation in Belarus. I will write about the summit itself next week because the reports of its results may cause mixed feelings. Nonetheless, there is one thing I can say with certainty today: Jaroslaw Kaczynski has no idea what he says.
None of the partner countries have supported the resolution on Belarus, but for different reasons. Georgia – because Belarus has not recognized so far the Russian annexation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Moldova – because it had been threatened with introducing a blockade on wine. Azerbaijan – because the country knows they are next ones to be condemned for President Aliyev’s practices. Armenia is sitting quietly, as the country is occupying Nagorno-Karabakh and fears multiplying enemies. Finally, Ukraine is working discretely for the respect of democratic principles in Belarus but having their own ‘’internal “ troubles the country does not want to put its neighbour in a pillory. In addition, Ukraine has still not settled the matter of the common long border.
The above facts will never be mentioned publicly but Lukashenko has created an efficient front for his case. Expectations of Mr. Kaczynski that here in Warsaw there will be a miracle and each of these countries in the name of European solidarity will forget their own interests, demonstrate his ignorance, naivety or lack of goodwill.Author : Marek Siwiec MEP
